Searching for the Horned Owls

Michael Baicker and Josh Dutko surveying one of the boards in Drexel Woods.

Green Frog

Courtesy of Herb Lord.

The green frog has been seen on occassion in tributaries and water-filled depressions in Drexel Woods.  Green frogs are often brown in color, so don't let the color fool you.  Note the prominent ridge along the back of this green frog.  Green frogs and bull frogs are two of our most common frog species, but bull frogs lack the dorsolateral ridge which clearly helps distinguish between the two 'green-colored' frogs.

Spring Peeper

Close up of the spring peeper. Spring peepers are difficult to see due to their small size, about the size of one's thumb nail.  Despite their tiny size they are commonly heard in very loud singing choruses in late winter and early spring.  Their diminutive size, toe pads and diagnostic "X" pattern on their backs help to identify one in the hand.
